Cancellation Policy
Law Enforcement K9 Training Policy Purpose: To establish standards for training, certification, deployment, and maintenance of K9 teams to ensure safety, effectiveness, and legal compliance. 1. Selection & Eligibility Handlers must be sworn officers in good standing. Dogs must pass a health and temperament evaluation and be approved for duty (common breeds include German Shepherds, Malinois, and Labradors). 2. Initial Training All K9 teams must complete: • 320+ hours for dual-purpose (patrol + detection) • 240+ hours for single-purpose (detection or tracking) Training includes: • Obedience and control • Detection (narcotics, explosives, firearms, etc.) • Apprehension, tracking, and building/area searches • Legal standards and handler safety 3. Certification Teams must certify annually through a department-approved or nationally recognized agency (USPCA, NAPWDA, etc.). 4. Maintenance Training • Minimum: 16 hours/month of documented training. • Includes obedience, detection, real-world scenarios. • Missed training must be made up quarterly. 5. Deployment Standards • K9s deployed only by certified handlers. • Use of force must align with agency policy. • Detection alerts must be supported by additional investigative factors. • Crowd control deployments require special authorization. 6. Record Keeping Handlers must document all training and deployments. Records include purpose, outcome, duration, and alert results. Retained per agency policy (typically 5+ years). 7. Health & Welfare Handlers are responsible for daily care. Dogs must receive annual veterinary checks. Housing (on and off duty) must be safe and clean. 8. Retirement K9s will be retired due to age, injury, or performance. Handlers may adopt the K9 with a signed liability waiver. Replacements undergo full initial training. 9. Oversight The K9 Unit Supervisor ensures all teams remain in compliance with policy, training standards, and legal updates. Non-compliance may result in retraining, removal from the unit, or disciplinary action.
